App development cost in India: 2026 price guide

In India, a simple app costs ₹4 lakh to ₹12 lakh, a mid-size app ₹12 lakh to ₹40 lakh, and a complex platform ₹40 lakh and up. What sets the price.

In India, a simple app typically costs ₹4 lakh to ₹12 lakh, a mid-complexity app ₹12 lakh to ₹40 lakh, and a complex platform ₹40 lakh to well over ₹1 crore, when built by an experienced agency. Freelancers can be cheaper for very small apps. Timelines run from about 2 to 3 months for a simple app to 6 months or more for a platform. The biggest factors are the number of user types, payments and integrations, and whether you need one codebase for both Android and iPhone.

Quotes in India vary more than almost anywhere else, from ₹50,000 to ₹50 lakh for what sounds like the same app. Here's how to read them.

Price ranges by type of app

These ranges assume a professional team, proper testing and a working admin panel.

Simple apps: ₹4 lakh to ₹12 lakh

A handful of screens, user accounts, one core feature and a basic admin. Examples: a booking app for a clinic or salon, a product catalogue with enquiries, an internal app for field staff to log visits.

Mid-complexity apps: ₹12 lakh to ₹40 lakh

Several user types, payments through UPI and cards, notifications, integrations with other systems, and a real admin panel. Most e-commerce, food ordering, service booking and education apps fall here.

Complex platforms: ₹40 lakh and up

Separate apps for customers, providers and admins, real-time tracking, marketplaces with split payments, heavy integrations, or AI at the core. Large platforms can pass ₹1 crore, especially when built with both web and mobile versions.

What developers charge per hour in India

Most agencies quote a fixed price, but it's built on hourly or monthly rates. Typical ranges in 2026:

  • Freelancers: roughly ₹800 to ₹2,500 an hour, depending on experience.

  • Small and mid-size agencies: roughly ₹1,500 to ₹4,000 an hour.

  • Large firms and specialist teams: ₹4,000 an hour and above.

The same app can cost three times more at one agency than another, and both can be fair. The difference is usually team seniority, how much testing and design is included, and whether the quote covers things like the admin panel and store submission.

What drives the cost up

Screens are a poor guide to cost. These factors matter more:

  • User types. A customer app is one thing. A customer app plus a delivery partner app plus a restaurant dashboard is three.

  • Payments. UPI, cards and wallets through Razorpay, Cashfree or PhonePe are well supported. Split payments, refunds, subscriptions via UPI AutoPay and wallets inside your app add real work.

  • Integrations. Connecting to Tally, a shipping aggregator, a government API or a legacy system is often the most unpredictable part of the build.

  • Languages. Supporting Hindi, Marathi, Tamil or other languages is worth it for many Indian audiences, and needs design and content time.

  • Compliance. The DPDP Act affects consent, data storage and user rights. Fintech and health apps carry extra rules. Our DPDP compliance checklist covers the basics.

  • AI features. Chatbots, recommendations, document reading or voice add build and running costs.

Where cheap quotes cut corners

A ₹60,000 quote for an app like Swiggy is not a bargain. It's usually one of these:

  • A clone script with your logo on it, which is hard to change and often poorly secured.

  • No proper testing on the cheap Android phones most of your users own.

  • No admin panel, or a very thin one, so your team does everything by hand.

  • Source code that stays with the developer, or an account in their name instead of yours.

  • No support after launch.

Before signing, ask who owns the code, what testing is included, and what happens when you find a bug in week three.

Also ask to see two or three apps the team has built that are live in the Play Store, and read the recent reviews. Reviews that mention crashes, slow loading or payments failing tell you how the team handles the unglamorous work that decides whether customers stay. How to keep your budget sensible

The best way to spend less is to build less at first:

  • Start with the one flow that proves your idea, and cut everything else to version two.

  • Use one cross-platform codebase with Flutter or React Native for Android and iPhone.

  • Consider a web app first if your users are happy to use a browser.

  • Use proven services for login, payments, SMS and maps.

Remember the running costs too: hosting, SMS and WhatsApp messages, payment gateway fees of around 2% per transaction for most methods, and maintenance of about 15 to 20% of the build cost every year. Our guide to app maintenance costs explains what that covers.

Indian cost vs international cost

Indian teams cost less than US or European agencies for similar work, which is why many international companies build here. For Indian businesses, the useful comparison is between Indian options, and the gap between a freelancer, a small agency and a senior team is bigger than the gap between cities.

If you're comparing internationally, our global guide to app development cost has the same breakdown in international market rates.

Questions about app development cost in India

How much does it cost to make an app like Swiggy or Zomato in India?

A focused version with customer ordering, restaurant dashboards, delivery partner tracking and payments typically costs ₹25 lakh to ₹60 lakh or more. Clone scripts are cheaper, but they're hard to customise and maintain.

Is it cheaper to hire a freelancer or an agency in India?

A freelancer is usually cheaper upfront for small apps. An agency brings design, testing, project management and continuity, which matters for anything your business depends on. For larger apps, agencies are often cheaper overall because fewer things go wrong.

How long does it take to build an app in India?

Around 2 to 3 months for a simple app, 3 to 5 months for mid-complexity apps, and 6 months or more for platforms. Clear scope and quick feedback shorten it more than anything else.

Do I need separate apps for Android and iPhone?

Usually not. Cross-platform frameworks build both from one codebase, which saves money. Many Indian businesses launch on Android first, since most of their users are there, and add iPhone soon after.
